The problem with tomatoes repeatedly arises that their skin bursts shortly before harvest. Read here why tomatoes burst and how you can prevent them.

The burst can be prevented

Sometimes this problem depends on the variety (reading tip: Interesting facts about tomato varieties), sometimes it also depends on the weather. Basically, you should always take a close look at cracked tomatoes before eating, because the cracks can cause harmful bacteria to settle, which can cause rot. Such tomatoes are of course inedible. Otherwise, you can also use cracked tomatoes sensibly.

But here is what the causes of split tomatoes are and how you can prevent them from bursting open.

Causes and tips against the bursting of tomatoes

»Circular, flat cracks:

Circular, flat cracks in the tomato skin are mostly due to too much sun exposure. In such cases, too many leaves have often been removed from the tomato tree. You can remedy this by shading the tomatoes a little over high heat. In this way it is often possible to prevent the tomatoes from becoming corked.

»Many small cracks:

Many small cracks are often caused by the tomatoes being too wet and then being exposed to direct heat much too quickly. If this was due to human irrigation, be sure to water the tomatoes only in the early morning or only in the evening. It is important that you never water the tomatoes from above, but only the stem of the plant.

Tip:

Against summer downpours, you can only set up a roof or use a so-called tomato house.

»Straight deep cracks:

Deep cracks in particular, which often run out in a circle, can be attributed to strong temperature fluctuations. The plants find protection under garden fleece, e.g. during cool night hours at the end of the tomato season.

Tip:

At the same time, you should water the tomatoes only slightly in the event of strong temperature fluctuations.

»Star-shaped cracks:

Star-shaped cracks often go hand in hand with a wide range of nutrients (e.g. if you have fertilized the plant too much). However, such cracks often occur if you water the tomatoes too irregularly. However, the tomatoes also react to prolonged dryness alternating with severe wetness by cracking the skin surface.

By the way:

Years of observations from specialist nurseries led to the result that greenhouse tomatoes in particular are far less affected by cracks. This is primarily due to the uniform climate conditions prevailing there.
