Quince trees are becoming increasingly popular in our gardens. If you would like to plant and maintain a quince tree, then we have the most important information here.

Quince trees need a sunny place

The yellow-green fruit that thrives on the quince tree is somewhere between apple and pear and can be processed well into jelly, mus, juice or within a wide variety of baked goods (e.g. fruit bread).

Due to the tart, sour taste of the quince, it is usually only consumed when cooked. The quince is even said to have healing properties for diarrhea and fever.

Quince trees are very popular again

For a long time the quince was unfortunately no longer recognized by the gardeners and therefore increasingly disappeared from the gardens. But in the meantime, people have come to think of this traditional wood and more and more often, especially in rural areas, you come across a quince tree - also in open spaces.

Breed forms:

In the specialist trade, quince cultivars are now increasingly being offered, for example as mixed fruit apple quince or pear quince. These mixed fruits are highly recommended, because you can even eat them raw because they have a much sweeter taste.

If you also want to plant a quince tree and then harvest plenty of fruit, then you should follow the tips below.

Plant the quince tree

You can plant the hardy quince trees, which grow up to 8 meters tall, in spring on almost all nutrient-rich, but not calcareous soils that do not form waterlogging (good soil permeability). When choosing the location, you should also pay attention to a full sun place.

" Tip:

Protect young quince trees against strong frosts with a garden fleece in the early years.

However, you should know that quince trees, which belong to the genus of the rose family, bear fruit rich in vitamin C for the first time after four years at the earliest. In addition, from May to early June there is a beautiful blooming phase with white-pink flowers.

Maintain quince tree

»Pruning and fertilizing:

In principle, the quince is one of the easy-care trees that are satisfied with a single fertilization in the form of compost around the tree trunk. And they are also pruned only when necessary (thinning out the tree top), whereby shortening young shoots always promotes denser branching.

Only cut back quince trees if necessary

" To water:

You don't have to water quince trees often. Simply pile the tree trunk all around with thick bark mulch. This stores enough moisture for the quince tree, which means that additional irrigation is only necessary during long periods of drought.

»Pest infestation:

Quinces are rarely attacked by pests (e.g. lice, fungal diseases, etc.). And if you do, you can usually control these pests with biological measures (like apple and pear trees).

Only the fire blight (a very rare but contagious infectious disease) requires immediate disposal of the quince tree in the household waste. Important: this pest infestation is even subject to notification!

Harvest quinces

The harvest of the quinces - including the cultivated forms - is usually between the end of September and the end of October, depending on the weather, you can even harvest fruit until November. The ripeness of the fruit can be recognized very well by the color change from green to yellow.

Do not store quinces together with apples and pears

Fruits that have not been processed immediately can even be stored in a cool room for around 8 weeks without any problems. But be careful: you should never store quinces together with apples and pears. And during ripening, you also have to expect a strong odor, which is by no means unpleasant.
